St. Florian

Patron Saint of Firefighters

Florian was born in the 4th century about 250 A.D. in Cetium (Austria).  He joined the Roman Army as a youth, and through hard work and determination he advanced through the ranks to become a commander.  The Emperor Diocletian and his assistant Maximian liked Florian because of his abilities to solve problems and work with people.  They saw Florian as a man capable of handling heavy responsibilities.  Besides his duties to the military, he was charged with leading the firefighting brigade of the day.  He is said to have stopped an entire town from burning by throwing a single bucket of water on the blaze, and he is often pictured this way.   Florian had converted to Christianity in a time when the Roman emperors were trying to eliminate Christianity throughout their realm.  At one point he was ordered to offer up a sacrifice to the Roman gods, something in which he did not believe in and would not do.  When ordered to execute a group of Christians, he refused, professed his own faith, and thus was sentenced to death by fire.   Legend has it that while standing on the funeral pyre, Florian is reputed to have challenged the Roman soldiers to light the fire, saying "If you do, I will climb to heaven on the flames."  After making this bold statement and apprehensive about his words, instead of burning Florian, he was flogged.  After being severely flogged, the Emperor’s assistant Aquilius, decided to drown Florian by tying a giant stone around his neck and throwing him into the river Enns.  A faithful lady recovered and honorably buried his body.

About 600 years later, sometime between 900-955, a monastery was erected near St. Florian's tomb, and subsequently the village of St. Florian grew up around it.  His body was recovered and eventually removed to the Augustinian Abbey of St. Florian, near current-day Linz, Austria

Soon after he was canonized as a saint in the Catholic Church, a person was saved from a fire by invoking St. Florian's name.  Since then, and because of his stand and resistance to death by fire, St. Florian has become the protector of firefighters all over the world.

Dear God, through the intercession of our patron, Saint Florian, have mercy on the souls of our comrades who have made the supreme sacrifice in the performance of their duty, and on all who have gone before us after years of faithful discharge of their responsibilities which now rest on ourselves. Give us Grace to prepare each day for our own summons to Thy tribunal of justice. Into Thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. Withersoever Thou callest me, I am ready to go. Merciful Father of all men, save my from all bodily harm, if it be Thy will, but above all, help me to be loyal and true, respectful and honorable, obedient and valiant. Thus fortified by virtue, I shall have no fear, for I shall then belong to Thee and shall never be separated from Thee.
